The Great Horned Owl

September 9, 2009

Oooh, it's THAT day. 9-9-9. Well today on 9-9-9 I went out early with my dog. For a change I walked to the edge (and I do mean EDGE) of my front yard and looked waaaaaay down and saw something sitting on a branch that was vaguely Owl shaped. I made a mad dash for the House, grabbed my binoculars and ran back. Which for me is no easy task. Hot on my heels was my teenaged daughter Lexi. Made it back to the spot where I had been and put the binocs to the old face and WOW!

There he was, A Great Horned Owl. He was Massive! Lexi and I took turns gawking at him but I was the one who had them on him when he got fed up with the tourists. Absolutely Huge, absolutely glorious and Whata BIRD! I'm hoping that he lives around here and that we get to see him often. He made my day. First time I have EVER seen a Great Horned free and wild. Gosh I love this place.

School got under way yesterday. Can't say as I missing them with all the quiet around here. The reason I can't say that is because Himself is wandering around making a huge amount of noise when he's supposed to be working. He's trying on this "work from home mode", so far he's found better things to do. Like clean out the rabbit cage, hoover the down stairs, make some tea, nag me about cleaning out the utility room.

I'm not a whole lot better this morning. Instead of making jewelry or printing out business cards or even cleaning off my desk, I'm sitting here writing about that fantastic owl. Guess I should be heading out to do something. Something constructive at least. ;-) Happy 9-9-9 day y'all!

  1. Tell me you got a picture of that great bird?! The one and only I've seen here in IL was a rather small one that was killed on the side of the road. Tragic, to be sure. I have had the enormous pleasure of seeing a bald eagle here very up close and personal, and let me tell you, that was a breathtaking site!

  2. Hey GreenGoddess,

Sorry to say I didn't get a picture of it. NEXT time however, I'll be grabbing my camera with the 10x zoom lens. I think he must hang around this area. At least I sure hope so!

  3. Aren't they awesome? I have seen them twice.
One flew soundlessly across a small trail in the woods, between my house and a friends. One of the kids was on my back in a pack. We got a real good look and were both enthralled. The other sighting was one sitting atop a large tipi of tree trunks waiting to be cut into firewood. We saw this the first morning we were back home in the Kootenays, after a stint on the Island. It was like a good welcome home omen.

  4. I keep looking to see him again. I'm going to try and get a picture of him and post it. I've also seen a couple of bald eagles, WAAAAAAY up high. Got the binoculars, saw the sun glinting off thier white heads. Saw a kestrel going off after a quail and a red tailed hawk. Oh and we have a large flock of wild turkeys that pass through every morning or evening. Sure do love this place.
